Sofia - Introduction

Sofia is the capital and the largest city of Bulgaria and home to 1.4 million people. It lies in the west of Bulgaria at the foot of Vitosha Mountain, where ski resorts make for winter fun right on the city’s doorstep.

The city combines European, Ottoman and communist-era architecture, providing a home for ancient archeological sites, natural mineral baths, beautiful Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques, communist monuments, and more recently, glitzy shopping malls and posh hotels and casinos.

The city has a 2,500 year-long history, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is famous for its many mineral health springs, one of which is centrally located and freely accessible to the public.

Sofia has a dynamic vibe and remains largely unaffected by mass tourism. Among its attractions are museums, galleries, theaters, restaurants, bars and clubs. The city also enjoys plenty of green spaces and features a skiing resort right on its doorstep.

Today, despite new affluence, big differences can still be seen between the rich and the poor.
