Algiers - introduction

Algiers is the capital city of Algeria and also its largest city. It has a population of approximately 1.5 million people, 3.5 million of which live in the metropolis, and is the third largest city in the entire Maghreb, the northern part of African continent.

The modern part of the city lies along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, while the ancient core is set on the steep hill behind and crowned by a citadel. The socially and culturally dynamic city combines colonial-style buildings and picturesque Islamic houses and monuments. The city is known also as 'Alger la Blanche', or Algiers the White, due to the glistening white facades of the buildings.

Among the city's notable attractions are the Monument of the Martyrs commemorating Algerian independence, the ancient Kasbah quarter, the grand Ketchaoua Mosque, and the Notre Dame d'Afrique Basilica, constructed around 1858 and the city's most prominent landmark.
