London Stansted Airport (STN) is located at Stansted Mountfitchet in the District of Uttlesford in Essex, 30 mi (48 km) north-east of central London.
It is Britain's third-busiest airport, offering flights to more than 160 destinations in over 30 countries and is the third largest airport serving the London area after Heathrow and Gatwick; and it is one of London's five international airports along with Luton and London City.
Stansted is a hub for a number of major European low-cost carriers.
The airport, easily accessed from London, is situated next to junction 8 of the M11 motorway, about 24km (15miles) away from junction 27 of the M25 motorway. Stansted Airport is well served by buses and coaches, but please note that at present the majority of buses and coaches that serve Stansted Airport are not wheelchair accessible. Most services will be able to carry a folded wheelchair, as long as passengers can board the service unaided. Please contact the specific transport operator should you require further information.
The coach station is close to the terminal building and access is via ramps, lifts or by escalator. The coach station waiting room, ticket office and toilet are all accessible to wheelchair users. Tickets may be purchased from the waiting room office or at the coach desks in the terminal building between 08:00-20:00. You can also purchase tickets onboard the coach. Please see details of services or contact the Traveline on 0870 574 7777. If you require a wheelchair or assistance from the coach station please ask a member of staff or use the help phone which is located in zone D of the short stay car park. This is a free service up to the point of check-in.
Train services
The train station is located directly below the terminal building and access is via ramps, lifts or escalators. A help point is located close to the blue/orange badge bays in zone D of the short stay car park. You can request wheelchair push/provision or help with baggage from here. This assistance is free up to check-in for those passengers with special needs. Help phones are located outside each of the revolving entry doors for the same purpose.
Induction loops are fitted in many areas of the terminal and satellites and are identified by the sympathetic ear sign. All telephones throughout the airport are fitted with induction couplers. Public text phones are situated in the international arrivals area and in the satellite two departure lounge. A number of airport staff are proficient in BSL stage one and the majority have been trained in deaf awareness. Many of the staff are able to finger spell.
Facilities for the blind and partially sighted
Guide and hearing dogs are the only dogs allowed in the terminal buildings. The airport directional signs are black on yellow providing optimum contrast to assist all users. Reserved seating areas aim to provide low level flight information screens, but if you have difficulty seeing the monitors, please advise your airline at check-in.
Getting to your gate
There is a transit train system which connects passengers from the departure lounge to the satellites where the boarding gates are located. The same service operates for returning passengers:
All trains are fully wheelchair accessible. Each train has two help points situated either end of the car. Normal train service is every three minutes and is free. If your aircraft is not linked to a satellite, your airline or their handling agent will arrange your transfer. Please advise them of your requirements at the time of check-in and ask if there is a charge for the service.
Reserved seating areas
Reserved seating areas, clearly identified by the use of special needs pictograms, are available for special needs passengers and are located throughout the airport in the general seating areas. These areas aim to provide the following features:
An induction loop. Arms on both sides of seats. Space for wheelchair users. Low level flight information monitors.
Security checks
The safety and security of our passengers is our number one priority. All passengers must pass through security control before they enter the departure lounge. Wheelchair users will inevitably activate the archway metal detector, and security personnel are obliged to hand search passengers who activate the alarms: therefore chair and passenger will be searched. You can ask to be searched in private, away from the main security control area if you prefer.
Toilet facilities
Unisex accessible toilets are provided on the main concourse and within the departures lounge. Parents travelling with children are welcome to use the unisex accessible toilets.

Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports have Personal Shoppers who will help you with your purchases in the shops after security control. At Heathrow this service is provided by Shopping Consultants, who, due to the large number of people that pass through the airport, are only available to advise you on purchases, rather than accompany you while shopping.
BAA airports also offer a Shopping Collection service for passengers travelling within the EU (excluding UK and Ireland flights to/from Heathrow). This allows you to buy before you fly, and collect on your return – saving you the trouble of carrying heavy or fragile goods to and from your holiday destination.
For further information on these services call the shopping information line on 0870 850 2825 (UK) or +44(0)121 410 5105 (outside the UK).

Airlines at Stansted Airport can now land on a fully re-surfaced runway thanks to a major nine-month project successfully completed on time and on budget. Since February, over 35,000 tonnes of asphalt (at a rate of up to 400 tonnes a night) have been used to complete the L30 million project.
As Stansted is a single runway airport, works could only take place at night when flights were at a minimum. At weekends, the runway would be completely closed to aircraft between midnight and 6am, while on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights the operational length of the runway was reduced to allow works to take place at either end, whilst allowing crucial night postal flights to continue operating. The type of surface used is very different from that used on roads as it has special grooves that help aircraft tyres perform better in wet weather conditions.
Dave Powell, General Manager – Airside for BAA Stansted said:
“I would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly over the past nine months to deliver such a challenging and complex project so successfully on one of the busiest single runway airport’s in the world. Great skill, dedication and teamwork has enabled us to complete the work on time and on budget, and by keeping disruption to a minimum we have ensured that airport operations have continued to run smoothly throughout the duration of the project.
“Months of careful pre-planning and consultation with the airlines also took place to enable them to maintain their challenging flight schedules while dealing with the restrictions the works would bring on a live operational runway.”
Over 200 personnel, supported by 84 specialist vehicles, utilised the maximum available five hours working time, plus one hour clean up time per night, to ensure the runway re-opened in time for the first flight each morning. At the same time as the re-surfacing works, engineers replaced more than 1,000 runway lights and installed half a million metres of electrical cabling.
