Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) is the main airport in Hong Kong. It is commonnly known also as Chek Lap Kok Airport because it was built on the island of Chek Lap Kok by land reclamation.
It is an important regional trans-shipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in Mainland China and the rest of Asia.
The airport operates one of the world's largest passenger terminal buildings and operates twenty-four hours a day. It is the fifth busiest airport in the world; it sees an average of 800 aircraft take-offs and landings every day.
It is the primary hub for Cathay Pacific, Dragonair, Hong Kong Express Airways, Hong Kong Airlines, Air Hong Kong (cargo) and Asia Jet (private).
The airport covers 12.48km² of reclaimed land between the two islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau.
Skytrax, an independent air transport research organization, has ranked HKIA the top airport for eight consecutive years.
A new transportation corridor stretches 21 mi (34km) from Hong Kong Island to the site of the airport, incorporating a high-speed rail system, two tunnels, two bridges and a six-lane expressway.
From Hong Kong Island, follow road signs to Western Harbour Tunnel. From the tunnel, drive along the West Kowloon Expressway and follow airport road signs and cross the Tsing Ma Bridge to the airport island. Then continue along North Lantau Highway to reach the airport.
Airport Express is a dedicated airport railway providing fast and reliable service to the passengers. The operating hours are 0550 to 0115 daily. (last train departs from Airport and Hong Kong Stations at 0048 hour) Trains run at 12-minute intervals. The journey time between Airport and downtown is about 24 minutes.
Passenger can take MTR (Airport Express Line) from Airport to Tsing Yi Station and interchange MTR (Tung Chung Line) to Sunny Bay Station to take the Disneyland Resort Line to gain access to Hong Kong Disneyland.
Free services of In-town Check-in* and scheduled shuttle bus are available at Hong Kong and Kowloon stations for Airport Express passengers. Passengers can check-in and collect their boarding passes from one day in advance up to 90 minutes before take-off. HKIA Welcomes the Airbus A380 on its Inaugural Flight to Hong Kong
(HONG KONG, 18 November 2006) - Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) today welcomed the Airbus A380 as it touched down for the first time in Hong Kong. The superjumbo, which is the world's largest passenger aircraft, landed at 1225 on a technical route proving flight from Toulouse, France.
At a ceremony to mark the aircraft's arrival, Dr David J Pang, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said, "We are delighted that HKIA was among 10 key airports of the world to participate in this phase of the A380's type certification. As an international aviation hub, HKIA is committed to meeting the needs of passengers, customers and business partners. Making our airport ready for the A380 is central to that commitment."
Airport Management Director Howard Eng added, "We have invested HK$100 million for the corresponding facility enhancement to ensure that HKIA meets the Civil Aviation Department's licensing requirements for the A380 and other Code F aircraft."
The improvements completed earlier this year included widening taxiways and upgrading parking stands. These changes enabled HKIA to obtain an aerodrome license for A380 operation in July.
While at HKIA, the superjumbo will go through a series of facility trials, including parking at airbridges, connecting to fixed ground power and receiving pre-conditioned air. Ramp Services, such as catering, line maintenance and aircraft refueling, will also be tested during the A380's overnight stay.
